The Yellow Loop in Yellowstone National Park reopened this week with fewer voters after historic flooding destroyed its roads and damaged homes.

Efforts to repair and clear the affected areas are still ongoing and have a license plate system to keep the number of visitors low as they are likely to continue for months to come.

Park said Wednesday that a backup was cleared at the entrance later in the afternoon according to local time and that usually 10,000 or more vehicles entered the South Loop.

“It’s too early to tell whether the license plate system will work. It seems to have done its job by halving our normal traffic counts.” Yellowstone Superintendent Com Sholey Said. “As we have discussed with our community partners, we will monitor this together and make adjustments if necessary. We look forward to seeing visitors back to Yellowstone and appreciate the patience of the people and community partners as we continue to work through this difficult situation.”

Yellowstone National Park will reopen after the floods

Lines at gates at three of Yellowstone’s five entrances stretched for miles in the morning, with less than 1% of vehicles turned over due to a faulty license plate.

The cars were overturned before they could get into the lines, Sholi told the Associated Press.

Cars with even-numbered last digits on their license plates can be registered on even days, and odd-numbered last-numbered ones can arrive on odd days.

Groups of visitors traveling together in different cars are excluded from the license plate system, as well as reservations at campgrounds and hotels.

The Norris Geyser Basin, one of the busiest areas in the park, also reported light activity.

The floods came at the start of the summer tourist season. Last year, America’s first national park received a record 4.9 million visits.
