The devastating floods at Yellowstone National Park have forced many summer tourists to cancel their Western holidays.

However Diane Shober, executive director of the Wyoming Office of Tourism, wants visitors to protect their plans, she said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“My hope is that people do not cancel their trips this summer,” she said. “They still come and take advantage of this beautiful international world symbol of nature.”

Yellowstone National Park will reopen after the floods

Shober described the mountain west of the US as “truly extraordinary”, particularly the nation’s least populous state and the “western last tower”, also known as Wyoming.

“You can see these beautiful, beautiful wildlife and scenic views and really taste the western culture,” she says. “I wish we could all have fun for visitors and residents.”

Yellowstone National Park was partially reopened after seven days, wiping out flood-damaged homes and infrastructure.

Park administrators opened three of the park’s five entrances, but placed an odd-even ration system to limit visitor access on a given day. Cars with even-numbered last digits on their license plates can be registered on even-numbered days, and odd-even-numbered ones can be registered on odd days, Fox News Digital reported Wednesday.

Shober suggested that many travelers who want to visit the closed parts of Yellowstone National Park should consider visiting many other scenic spots in the area instead.

Other units in Wyoming and the surrounding national park system include the Bihar Canyon National Recreation Area, the Devil’s Tower National Monument, the Black Hills Mountain Range and the Fort Laurmy National Historic Site.

“We have really amazing state parks in Wyoming,” she says. “So, if you’ve been looking for that kind of park experience, there are still a wide variety of places you can experience.”

Shober mentions how most of Wyoming’s roadways pass through national forests for road trippers.

The state of Wyoming, which is completely square, offers a variety of areas that immerse you in features from other states, such as the high desert landscape in the southwest corner of Salt Lake City in Utah.

Fossil Butte National Monument, one of the area’s landmarks, offers activities such as fossil fishing, which is an example of many sites “far away,” Shober said.

Born and raised in northeastern Wyoming, Shober shared his hometown’s small townscape and consistent event schedule as his favorite features.

With Wyoming’s largest city, Cheyenne, still made up of 65,000 people, Shober explained that visitors really have the opportunity to “live locally where the Western way of life prevails on the main streets”.

“There’s work to be done throughout the summer,” she says.

According to Shober, small towns in Wyoming, such as Cody and Thermopolis, have stepped in to pick up visitors who were evacuated from the Yellowstone during the floods.

“Hot Springs State Park is in Thermopolis [and] It’s probably one of the best dinosaurs to dig anywhere in the Mountain West, “she said.” And they thrived with people. “

“We know for a fact that people will find other things if they can not stay in Yellowstone,” she added. “They are enjoying themselves and they are still making the best of their vacations.”

Shober agrees that Yellowstone Travel has always been called the “greatest American road trip” for families, so the park is working diligently on further reopening efforts.

“The great news is, we’re in a much better place today than we were a week ago,” she said. “And with the help of the people in the Yellowstone National Park, the National Park Service, they opened the South Loop.”

Yellowstone expects to open its North Loop in the next two weeks, with an estimated 80% of the park open this summer.

Areas not open this summer include the Mammoth Hot Springs and the northern route along Lamar Valley.

Shober encouraged tourists to be prepared to plan “a bit differently” with these ongoing closures, despite the huge park spanning more than two million acres.
