MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico’s top diplomat on Monday launched an open josting to win President Andres Manuel Lpez Obrador’s Morena Party’s 2024 nomination.

Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard provided his WhatsApp number for comments from the public on Monday and said he would begin touring the country on Sunday to show support.

Lopez Obrador will not run for a second term, but as Morena’s party is built around him, whoever the president supports will get the party nomination.

There are many contestants, but there is no primary vote: the party conducts an internal survey to name the candidate. In the past, contestants have raised doubts about the accuracy and impartiality of party surveys.

Also in the running are Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and Interior Secretary Adam Lopez.

His political career was marred by problems with the subway line he built when Abrard was mayor of Mexico City.

A section of the elevated subway line that is currently closed collapsed in 2021, killing 26 people. Research has shown that structural defects play a key role in collapse.
