WASHINGTON (AP) – The State Department is confirming the death of a U.S. citizen believed to be the second American to be killed in the conflict in Ukraine..
The department said on Tuesday that Stephen Jabilsky had died in Ukraine and was in consultation with his family to provide consular support and assistance. “For the family at this critical time, we have nothing more than that,” it said.
The department did not provide a date or circumstances for his death, but a memorial published in his hometown newspaper stated that Jabilski, 53, had died on May 15. Recorder in Amsterdam, New York, where Jabilsky lived until 2018, he said. Killed while fighting in the village of Doroznyank in Ukraine.
Jabilski was the second American to die in the fighting in Ukraine. In late April, 22-year-old Marine Willie Joseph of Tennessee died fighting in Cancel Ukraine.
In a brief remarks about Zabielski, the State Department reiterated its long-standing advice to Americans not to travel to Ukraine for any reason due to the fighting.
