BERLIN (AP) – German Chancellor Olaf Schlz has said that a group of seven major democracies will make it clear that they hope Ukraine will receive the support it needs “as long as necessary” at its forthcoming summit.
In an interview with Germany’s dpa news agency published on Saturday, Scholz said he would like to use next week’s meeting with fellow G-7 leaders in the Bavarian village of Elmou to discuss Ukraine’s long – term prospects.
“We will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary,” Schlz said. “We want to make sure that the calculations of the Russian president (Vladimir Putin) do not work.”
“Once he has acquired enough land, Putin clearly hopes that everything will go well and that the international community will return to business as usual,” he added. “That’s an illusion.”
Schల్lz said he and his colleagues from France, Italy and Romania discussed further with President Volodymyr Zhelensky during their visit to Kiev on Thursday about specialized ammunition and artillery for Ukraine..
The four leaders also supported Ukraine’s bid for membership in the European Union, and Schల్lz said he hoped all countries in the alliance would support it at a meeting in Brussels next week.
