Indiana Pacers draft pick Benedict Mathurin has the utmost confidence in his abilities during his rookie season, which is a must for any professional basketball player.

But calling LeBron James before stepping on the court was a bolder move than the former Arizona Wildcats guard had imagined.

James, a four-time NBA champion who has won titles with three teams and won 18 All-Star appearances and four MVP awards, has yet to prove himself better than Mathurin, Mathurin told The Washington Post on Friday.

“A lot of people say he’s great,” Mathurin said. “I want to see how great he is. I do not think anyone is greater than me. He has to show me he is greater than me.”

The Lakers star, 37, did not appear to respond to comments from Mathurin, 20.

The pacers selected Mathurin, who finished 6th in the draft on Thursday. He left Arizona two seasons later with the Wildcats.

In his final year, Mathurin averaged 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He was named the 2022 Pac-12 Player of the Year, the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament MVP and the All-Pac-12 Tournament Selector.
