Matthew Fitzpatrick won the US Open, his first golf world title.
The 27-year-old English golfer won by one stroke, beating top players Will Zalatoris and Scotty Scheffler to finish six under par in Sunday’s final round of the tournament in Brooklyn, Massachusetts.
Fitzpatrick became the first Englishman to win the US Open since 2013.
Fitzpatrick previously won the 2013 US Amateur at the same venue, The Country Club. He is the first player from outside the US to win both US Open and US Amateur.
“There are no words,” Fitzpatrick said after receiving the trophy. “This is what you dream about as a child. This is what I have worked so hard for for such a long time. And you know I had a big monkey on my back trying to win here. And all, all they ever talked about was that. And you know, doing it like a major for my first win, there’s nothing better.”
Zalatoris and Scheffler, who placed second, finished with a score of 5 under par.
The tournament took place against a backdrop of turmoil in a normally noble sport. The debut of the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf series this month has created a rift in men’s professional golf.
Funded by the Saudi Arabian government, LIV Golf attracted top players with huge cash prizes and guaranteed payouts. In response, the PGA Tour suspended 17 players who chose to compete in the new series.

Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf kicked off and the PGA Tour promptly suspended 17 players.
Despite the tensions in the sport, players from both sides of the border come together for the US Golf Association’s Open. USGA CEO Mike Wang said last week that he could see an opportunity that would make it harder for LIV players to compete in future US Opens.
