The Manitoba Marathon has been canceled after Environment Canada issued a heat warning, organizers confirmed in a Facebook post to CBC News.

About an hour after the start of the race, the decision was made to cancel the event, which was attended by about 6,000 people.

They crossed the starting line at IG Field in Winnipeg at 7am, as the temperature was already a pleasant 23C, but humidity readings are likely to rise in the 35 to 40 range by 10am.

Earlier during the race, Manitoba Marathon chief executive Rachel Munday said the organizers were prepared for the heat, but they would be prepared to close sections of the track if the heat got too intense.

“We will take care of the safety of people,” she said before the start of the race.

“We have a lot of cooling stations, a lot of ice, a lot of sprinklers, a lot of community support, so we hope we can get people through the entire course without having to speed up the closure before we can finish everything.”

Road closure

If you are driving through Winnipeg this morning, expect some roads to be closed during the day.

Chancellor Matheson Road is closed from Research Way to University Crescent and University Crescent is closed from Chancellor Matheson Road to Pembina Highway.

The exit from Pembina Highway South to Jubilee Avenue East is also closed.

The City of Winnipeg says these road closures are in effect until 3:00 pm.
