Hopes of finding new survivors were dashed a day after a devastating earthquake hit Afghanistan’s Paktika province. The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 770 people died and 1,440 were injured in the 5.9 earthquake, while warning that the numbers could rise. The agency said 1,500 houses were damaged or destroyed in Gayane, one of the hardest hit areas in the province.

These images are beginning to show the extent of the damage and the relief effort, which officials say is winding down, leaving little hope of finding survivors.
