The police search is on Houston, Texas A gunman accused of firing on a police officer died Friday night after the suspect turned his shotgun on himself.

An officer responded to the apartment complex after hearing shots in the area around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to KRIV-TV, according to the Houston Police Department. Hearing more shots coming from inside an apartment, an unidentified officer called for a backup where an unidentified gunman shot the officer in the leg.

Police Chief Troy Finner said the officer had injured both legs, but was “in high spirits” after being taken to hospital.

The officer was released from the hospital and is recovering well at home.

It is not believed that the officer fired at the gunman.

After setting up the perimeter to find the shooter, it was discovered that the gunman had barricaded himself in the apartment.

Police later confirmed that, after hours of fighting, the shooter shot himself and died.
