WASHINGTON (AP) – Former Trump White House official Peter Navarro on Friday pleaded not guilty to defying Congress allegations after refusing to cooperate with a congressional hearing on the January 6 attack on US capital.

Navarro, 72, appeared in federal court in Washington to plead guilty to two counts..

He was charged with one count of contempt for failing to appear before a House committee investigating the January 6 attack, and a second charge of failing to submit documents requested by the committee.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta scheduled a hearing in November. Navarro’s lawyers have asked the court to submit the constitutional and legal questions needed to hear the case and hold a hearing next year.

Navarro argued that the select committee investigating the attack was illegal and therefore could not be enforced under the subpoena law issued to him in February.
