Santa Ana, California (AP) – Arrested lawyer Michael Avenatti pleaded guilty Thursday to four wire fraud and tax-related charges in a federal court case in Southern California alleging he defrauded his clients of millions of dollars.

Avenatti made the appeal during a court hearing in Santa Ana. Prosecutors said Avenatti could face up to 83 years in prison

The 51-year-old attorney who is defending himself in the California case said earlier this week that although he had not reached an agreement with federal prosecutors, he wanted to change his request to be held accountable and cause further embarrassment to his family.

Federal prosecutors allege that Avenati cheated clients out of millions by negotiating on behalf of clients and collecting settlement payments and sending money to accounts he controls. He faces up to 36 counts in 2019 on charges including wire and tax fraud.

The sentencing hearing is tentatively scheduled for September 19, however, if the government decides to prosecute him for any of the remaining counts, that date will be vacated so he will be sentenced on all counts after the trial. The government said it hopes to inform the court of its plans on Monday.

The government estimates that $ 9 million will be adequate compensation for victims affected by schemes related to wire fraud calculations. Aventi said he believes it is “much less” than that. The judge said he would consider sentencing as a matter of course.

Aventi is serving a five-year sentence at the Federal Facility in California for criminal charges in two cases in New York.

He was convicted of stealing book proceeds from porn star Stormy Daniels, who represented her on court and cable news programs during her lawsuit with then-President Donald Trump. Avengers has previously been convicted of attempting to rob Nike if the shoemaker did not pay him up to $ 25 million.

Avanti, who has been suspended from practicing law in California, rose to fame after representing Daniels in her lawsuit to remain silent about her alleged affair with Trump.

He became one of Trump’s leading opponents, attacking him on cable news programs and Twitter and at one point wanted to challenge him in the 2020 presidential election.

Avanti has been indicted in federal cases in New York and California. Mystery was announced in California last year after a judge found him guilty in New York and prosecutors failed to provide him with key financial evidence.

Aventi is due to attend a hearing on some California counts in July, while the rest are due to be heard.

Prosecutors say the money was used to raise millions of dollars from such clients and to finance a luxury lifestyle, including a private jet, without paying them what they owed.

Authorities say they collected $ 4 million from Los Angeles County for a man who was left paralyzed after injuries in custody and a suicide attempt, but have not received a settlement and paid the man a very small sum of $ 1,000 to $ 1,900. Progress in a broader solution.

In another case, prosecutors say Avenati raised $ 2.75 million in settlement payments for one client and used more money to buy a private plane.

Prosecutors allege he failed to pay personal income taxes and business taxes and pocketed millions of dollars in payroll taxes from the coffee chain he owned.

Prior to the indictments, Avenati faced a number of legal issues, including a major civil judgment and the bankruptcy of his law firm.
