He was wanted on a serious warrant for attempted murder by a suspect in Washington after he opened fire on police while trying to arrest him Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The suspect, then identified as 26-year-old Lane Scott Phipps, was in front of Pick-N-Bridge Auto Parts Yards on Highway 99 in the town of Linwood around 12 noon, police said.
When several officers tried to arrest Phipps, police said a preliminary report indicated that the suspect pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the head of a woman who was with him.
Officers tried to negotiate with the suspect, but he fled in the direction of the main parking lot of the yard, where his car was parked, according to officials.
