Arsenal continue to work on a deal to sign Youri Tielemans from Leicester after reaching an agreement to buy Fabio Vieira from Porto, who confirmed in a statement on Friday that they had accepted the offer.
Porto said Arsenal would pay €40m (£34m), including €5m in performance-related allowances. The Portuguese club stated that the transfer is “expected to be completed in the next few days”.
Vieira is a 22-year-old attacking midfielder who scored six goals and provided 14 assists in Portugal’s top flight in 2021/22, but his arrival has not changed Arsenal’s plans for Tielemans.
Leicester are preparing for Arsenal’s offer for the 25-year-old, who has one more year on his contract. Tielemans plays a deeper role than Vieira, with most of Belgium’s 50 appearances for Leicester in the last campaign coming from central midfield.
Manchester City made Calvin Phillips the preferred option to replace Fernandinho following Brazil’s departure. Phillips spent his entire career at Leeds and broke into the England squad in 2020. Leeds on Friday confirmed the signing of defensive midfielder Mark Roca from Bayern Munich, paying €12m plus bonuses.
City have targeted Brighton’s Mark Cucurella in another priority position, left-back, and are not looking to loan out Julián Alvarez, the 22-year-old striker who will join River Plate this summer.
City have sold goalkeeper Gavin Bazun to Southampton for £12m plus bonuses. They also have a buyback option and will receive a percentage of any future sale of the Ireland international, who was named Portsmouth’s Player of the Year last month after a season-long loan at the League One club.
