PHILADELPHIA — One firefighter has died after being trapped in a building that caught fire in Philadelphia and then collapsed early Saturday morning, fire officials said.

The fallen firefighter was not immediately identified, but Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said he was a 27-year veteran of the department.

According to Murphy, the building caught fire shortly before 2 a.m. on Saturday. The fire was extinguished, but at 3:24 the building collapsed.

Four more firefighters and an inspector from the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections were pulled from the rubble. Murphy said they are in stable condition in hospitals.

Numerous firefighters were at the scene as rescue efforts unfolded, with some hugging or wiping tears from their eyes, several news outlets reported.

“It’s unpredictable,” Murphy told reporters at a press conference. “It was just a catastrophic accident that hurt our department a lot.”
