A Brazilian judge has released former minister Bolsonaro from prison

Sao Paulo (AP) – A Brazilian federal judge released President Zaire Bolsonaro on Thursday, a day after he was arrested by federal police in connection with a kidnapping investigation.

Judge Ney Bello said Milton Ribeiro and four other suspects should be released because they were not part of the current administration and did not justify his detention before the trial.

Brazilian media reported that Ribeiro was released from prison in the city of Sవోo Paulo just hours after Bello made his decision.

His arrest is another blow to Bolsonaro’s re-election in October, with opinion polls suggesting that the right-wing president is behind left-wing former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who ruled from 2003-2010.

Ribeiro resigned as education minister in March after Brazilian media reported that he had leaked his conversations with the mayor, who has been accused of favoring the federal government in the distribution of the agency budget. He was appointed to the post in July 2020.

Leaked conversations have shown that Ribeiro has two evangelical pastors as unofficial mediators in contacting mayors who can help with the Bolsonaro campaign. The former minister himself is an evangelical pastor.

The two municipalities were reportedly ruled by their allies and demanded bribes, including one kilogram of gold.

  • Ribeiro has been accused of peddling, corruption, misconduct and administrative advocacy – accusing him of using his ministerial position to promote private interests.

Bolsonaro, who said months ago that he would “put his face in the fire” for Ribeiro, changed his tone after his former minister was jailed. Speaking live on his social media channels, the president said he still trusts Ribeiro, “but he will pay if the police find anything wrong.”
