Two people have been killed after an Amtrak train collided with a train crossing in Detroit.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, the incident happened early Tuesday morning when police were dispersing a drag race and car drifting crowd in the area.

“A swarm of trains flew. Unfortunately, this particular vehicle in question kept moving at high speed for some time and reached the railway tracks. [and] Tried to push the train back, “said Detroit Police Chief James White.

The station reported that a 20-year-old man and a woman from the nearby towns of Wixom and Novi died in the collision.

“Terrible, tragic, didn’t have to happen,” White said, according to Fox 2 Detroit. “This drag racing and flowing situation is completely unacceptable.”

A passenger on the train told Fox 2 Detroit that they “stopped abruptly after the collision and then the lights went off.”

The passenger also said that the train had stopped for at least three hours before heading to Pontiac.

Elsewhere in the U.S. on Tuesday, an Amtrak train heading to Chicago derailed after hitting a dump truck in Missouri, killing at least four people.

A statement from the National Transportation Safety Board said a press conference on the Missouri accident would be held on Tuesday.
